Cartoon Darkness

- Personal project

Developed as part of an illustration course, this project challenged us to create a visual piece for a musical artist, including a graphic identity that captured their essence.

I chose Amyl and The Sniffers, a band I’ve been listening to a lot lately. The lead singer, Amy Taylor, is all about chaotic energy and unapologetic freedom. She does exactly what she wants without seeking approval. Her voice carries powerful feminist and political messages that deeply inspire me. If I had discovered her at 13, I’m sure I would’ve thought: “I want to be like her when I grow up.” A true rock star.

The project was inspired by the album Cartoon Darkness, which also served as the key concept behind the visual direction. The goal was to explore the darker side of cartoon aesthetics, moving away from the overly “cute” style often associated with femininity. The result is a bold identity that aims to provoke, deconstruct, and intentionally create discomfort.

The illustration shows Amy in an empowered stance, holding two bags with crying faces, a visual metaphor for the cruel comments she often receives from men. Her response is simple: it’s just envy, and she couldn’t care less.
